Subjects
The Subjects page is where you build the master list of subjects taught at your school — Mathematics, English, Physics, and so on. Creating a subject here doesn't teach it anywhere by itself; it just makes it available to link to classes.
Accessing Subjects
- Click Subjects in the sidebar navigation
- View all subjects
Subjects Overview
The header shows a running total of how many subjects exist. Below it is a table listing every subject with its name, code, grade levels, description, and status.
Searching
Use the Search by name or code... box to filter the list as you type.
Creating a Subject
- Click Add subject
- Fill in the dialog
- Click Create subject
Subject Details
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Yes | e.g. "Mathematics" — at least 2 characters |
| Code | Yes | Short code, e.g. "MATH" |
| Grade levels | No | Tick which grades this subject applies to |
| Description | No | Optional notes, up to 500 characters |
TIP
Grade levels come from the grades already in use on your Classes page — if you haven't created any classes yet, this list is empty. Leaving every grade unchecked means the subject applies to all grades rather than none.
There's no separate curriculum-framework or active/inactive field in the create or edit form — every subject you create is active. The Status column always shows Active unless the subject was made inactive some other way.
Managing Subjects
Editing a Subject
Click anywhere on a subject's row to open the edit dialog, update the name, code, grade levels, or description, and click Save changes.
Deleting a Subject
- Open the ⋯ menu at the end of the row
- Choose Delete
- Confirm
Deleting a subject permanently removes it and breaks the link for any class currently using it. This can't be undone.
Analyzing a Subject
Choose Analyze (school-wide) from the ⋯ menu to see performance across every class that teaches this subject.
Linking a Subject to a Class
Adding a subject here does not automatically make it gradeable anywhere — a subject only becomes active for a specific class once it's linked to that class with a teacher on the class's own page.
That linking happens on the Subjects & teachers tab inside each class, not here. Open Classes, click into a class, and use that tab to:
- Pick a teacher for each of your school's subjects (or leave one Unassigned)
- Save the assignment
Only subjects linked to a class this way appear in that class's gradebook, report cards, student enrolment matrix, and — once a subject is linked — as an option when adding a Timetable slot for that class. See the Classes page for the full step-by-step.
WARNING
If a subject isn't showing up as an option somewhere in a class (gradebook, timetable, enrolment), the fix is almost always the same: go to that class's Subjects & teachers tab and link it there. Creating the subject on this page alone isn't enough.
Best Practices
- Set up subjects before classes — so they're ready to link when you build out each class
- Use consistent codes — short, recognizable codes make the timetable and gradebook easier to scan
- Cover your grade range — leaving grade levels blank applies a subject everywhere, which is usually only right for a handful of subjects
- Link before you grade — a subject sitting only on this page can't be graded until it's linked to a class with a teacher
